Adventures in Silver Clay
In ProgressI came across a Silver Clay Ring Kit on Instagram—whimsical, handmade rings made from clay that turns into sterling silver when fired. The idea of making one from start to finish with just a few tools was very very appealing, especially since I’d been curious about silversmithing before but wasn’t ready to commit. This seemed like a fun way to dip my toes into jewellery making, enjoy hehe.

Discovery: Instagram Ad

Saw an ad for a Silver Clay Ring Kit on Instagram. Asked my friend if she'd like to make one with me and she said yes 💍 💗
Craft Kit Arrived

Craft Time

Got all the stuff. Read the instructions and watched the videos, it may be tempting to get right into it but highly recommend watching the tutorials and FAQ vids first.
Materials Overview

This is what the clay looks like.
Gem Size Reference

The gems are pretty small -- cat for scale.
Rolling the Clay

Setting up and Forming

Figured out our ring sizes, set up the mandrel (wooden thingo), joined the clay, stuffed gems into the clay. The manual advised us to design the ring before we start, and we did, but we had to move quickly (silver clay dries fast) so it was mostly freestyle 😂
Cook the Rings

Fired the rings for approx. 25 minutes. Turning every 5 minutes.
Polish

Polished the rings with the steel brush and polishing agate knife.
End Product!

Really loved the process and the result. Unfortunately, there was a crack in my ring where the gem didn’t have enough padding. There was an optional step where they mentioned you could gently hammer the ring to make it perfectly circular—emphasis on "gently" 😂 I started tapping at 1/10 strength, saw little change, then jumped to 7/10 strength… and it cracked.

Me and my friend's rings

Fortunately, her ring was sturdy and crack-free 💪🏼 The ring shrank quite a lot after firing, my intention was to wear it on the middle or fourth finger, but it ended up only being suitable for my pinky 😂 I will go 2 sizes up next time.
